I save the .XCF (GIMP user here~ X3) file forever, just in case! Besides being useful for making changes, it can also help prove you're the original artist in cases of art theft.

I save it. Because if I want to play around with it later, or edit it, I can. Though I may take your idea: after it's been on the computer a year, move it to the external HD. But I still won't flatten it, I have lots of room.

I'm actually thinking of getting a small external HD just for that as my other one contains pc backup files.

You and =Teh-Kenji seem to have the same idea. And I always thought most art programs used .psd files. The only program that I know off the top of my head with a unique file name is opencanvas. The more you know*shooting star*!
